What's the buzz about Manuka Honey? Manuka Honey has over 30 years of research at the University of Waikato in New Zealand which was pioneered by Dr. Peter Molen whose work is collected and carried on in the Honey Research Unit.
Real Manuka Honey only comes from New Zealand and has been compared to many other honey produced all over the world. The interesting thing that sets the Manuka Honey apart from others is its potent anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. They have been standardized and the honey is tested for its strength and labeled. UMF stands for unique manuka factor and 15 or 16+ is considered medicinal grade honey. The other grading system in place is MGO which is short for methylglyoxal, the naturally-occurring chemical unique to honey made from nectar gathered from the Mānuka bush. A medicinal rating of MGO is 550.
